The media tools of our century: Web 2.0 and webcams, mobile phones and real time media, social networks and engaging avatars. These, plus easy editors and media libraries, mean you can do more with the power of video than every before.  Add captioning, chromakey, and more to help curriculum stick for the media-minded students you teach.  A fast-paced tour of tools and techniques. Many are free, the rest reasonable. Applications for primary through high school.

There are some mysteries worth demystifying. HTML code is the backbone behind more than just the Internet. Yet few teachers spent time on it. Basic knowledge can create new awareness and power for students.  Media players like iPods can be changed. Projects can dazzle inside Google Earth.  Videos can be inserted onto the websites, and much more.  Learn simple cut-and-pastes for beginners or experts that will pullback the curtain and create wizards in your classroom.

Note: Downloaded PowerPoints may have trouble opening on some machines because the videos are not attached. It takes time for the machine to attempt to find each attached video.  Eventually, it offers the choice to download without videos.The pdf's are safer and should download without problems.  Attaching videos would make the downloads impossibly large.

Note that many of thePowerPoints are the newer Microsoft Office .pptx format.  They should open in previous versions of Microsoft PowerPoint. The files were created in PowerPoint on either Mac or PC.  Many of these files are large. I aplogize in advance for the download time.

Note on Media in Google Earth: When saving a Placemark with embedded flash video, the video file does not come with the saved file.  An embedded image in a placemark does, but the flash apparently does not.  Although I was certain I had embedded flash in a save file, I cannot duplicate this so must conclude that currently an embedded flash file doesn't attach. This is a change in the new versions Google Earth.  Who knows what will happen in future versions. Whether the image comes along also depends on the version of GE.

Mobile is the next wave in technology. Cellphones text faster than email, spread video faster than cameras, and webcast in real time. They take assignments, document work, translate and podcast. Mobile interfaces with Web 2.0. Best of all:  teachers and students carry them already! Learn what we can adapt to achieve educational goals.  Examples are in place. Mobile is the web all over again—be ready.

What veteran teachers suspected the research has proved: 21st Century students are different. With different attention spans, higher IQ test scores, and social networks, their sophistication comes earlier—with a different skill set. There is a silver lining: We can teach this “New Brain” more effectively, more efficiently, more engagingly. We have the technology! Media has evolved and education must evolve to match.
